Mainland Sumatra Surf Camp Guide - Krui Surf Camps
So you want to go to Sumatra, eh? And not the Mentawai's?! Good for you, you want a real Indonesian surf trip. You don't want to spend 12 nights and 13 days packed next to 10 other surfers competing with 50 other boats for position and you don't want to deal with the plague-like crowds on Bali anymore. South Sumatra is it. Cheap accommodation, rugged surroundings, and really, really good waves.
The main accommodation area is in Karang Nyimbor where there is around 6 camps to choose from. Some of the camps charge a lot to stay in 4-6 bed dorm rooms while others give you private bungalows on the beach for next to nothing. A good place to start when looking for accommodation is http://www.paradisesurfcampsumatra.com/ where Rene provides private bungalows on the beach with 3 meals a day for around $20.
If you don't want to stay in Karang, you'll need to arrange something in Krui proper which is around 30 minutes north of Karang. There is Secret Sumatra camp which is kind of pricy but very nice, and several losmen/homestays. The waves in Krui need a fair bit of swell to get going, but once they do: woo hoo! some of the best waves in the area for sure!
On the Karang side, make sure you check out Way Jambu on the bigger days. The Sumatran Pipeline has one of the squarest, picture perfect barrels in the area!
